The word garam means “heating the body” or “hot,” while masala translates to “spice mixture.” Although recipe ingredients vary throughout the Indian region, and from family to family, the blend typically consists of black pepper, cloves, cinnamon, cumin, nutmeg, cardamom and coriander.
